Philadelphia Dream Kids
It’s often said that a picture is worth a thousand words. If that's true, then the Philadelphia Dream Kids had a lot to say as they participated in the NYC SALT Photography Club.
15 students were given professional digital cameras, and used the camera lens to view the world around them. NYC SALT, a nonprofit photography program that teaches young people to have a voice in their world, led a one-week intensive photography course during the Philadelphia Learning Center’s 2013 Summer Program. Dream Kids learned the basics of photography, and put their new skills to use on a field trip to Center City Philadelphia, capturing shots of everything from their peers frolicking in the fountain, to historical landmarks.
To culminate the experience, students put on a photography showcase where parents, staff, students, volunteers, and Dream Academy partners got to hear the club facilitators and participants share about their experiences, and see the students' photographic work. The Photography Club not only allowed these students to look at their world through a different lens, it also exposed them to a whole new world altogether.
